It’s been about five months since Tim Cook walked off the stage and the iPhone 17 Pro Max landed in our hands. Usually, by February, the "new iPhone smell" has worn off. We stop babying the screen, we stop showing off the new colors to friends, and the device just becomes... well, a phone.
But the iPhone 17 Pro Max is aging differently. After using this beast daily since launch day (shoutout to the Cosmic Orange crew!), I can finally tell you if it’s actually worth the massive ₹1,49,900 price tag or if you should just wait for the 18.
Here is my honest, long-term review of the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
The Design: Learning to Love the "Plateau"
Let’s address the elephant in the room: The Camera Plateau.
When leaks first surfaced, I hated the idea of a camera bar stretching across the back. In person? It actually works. Unlike the old wobble we got with corner bumps, the iPhone 17 Pro Max sits flat on a table. Finally.
The new Cosmic Orange finish is stunning—it shifts from a deep bronze to a fiery sunset hue depending on the light. It’s a welcome break from the boring greys and silvers of the past few years. However, at 231g, this phone is still a brick. If you have small hands, you will need a PopSocket.
The Screen: 3,000 Nits is No Joke
Apple finally bumped the peak brightness to 3,000 nits, and living in a sunny city like Pune, this has been a game-changer. I was reading emails at a cafe terrace at noon yesterday, and the screen looked like paper. No squinting required.
The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR display is massive, but the bezels have been shaved down so thin they’re basically invisible. It’s immersive, beautiful, and the 120Hz ProMotion feels smoother than ever, likely thanks to the new A19 Pro chip handling the frame rates.
The Camera: The "Square Sensor" is Magic
The triple 48MP rear setup is great (crisp, detailed, 8x optical-quality zoom is fantastic), but the real MVP this year is the front camera.
Apple’s new 18MP Square Sensor with Center Stage is one of those "how did I live without this?" features. Because the sensor is square, you can rotate the phone from portrait to landscape, and the selfie doesn't crop. It just re-frames instantly.
Vloggers: This is a dream.
Group Selfies: It automatically detects when a third friend squeezes in and widens the shot without distorting faces.
Night Mode on the telephoto lens is also vastly improved. I took a shot of the moon last week, and while it's not quite "Galaxy Ultra" level zoom, the clarity was surprisingly good for an iPhone.
Performance & Battery: The A19 Pro
I’ll keep this short: The phone is faster than my laptop. Editing 4K ProRes video on the fly is glitch-free.
But the Battery Life... wow. Apple claimed 30+ hours of video playback, and they weren't lying. I regularly end my day with 35-40% battery left, even with heavy GPS and camera usage. The new 40W charging speed is also a lifesaver—getting to 50% in 20 minutes changes your charging habits completely.
Our Verdict

What Could Be Better
- Price: At ₹1.5 Lakh+, it is a serious investment.
- Weight: It is heavy and difficult to use one-handed.
- Slow Data Transfer: The included cable in the box is still slow (buy a Thunderbolt cable!).
